Lori Johnson is currently in her sixth year directing the
choirs at Cordova High School, and the sixth year of her
teaching career. She is a 1995 graduate of Millington
Central High School in Millington, TN (Shelby County School
System), where she was a member of her school's Concert
Choir, Chamber Choir, and Jazz Choir. After high school she
continued her studies at the University of Mississippi
(Oxford, MS), participating in two elite ensembles (Concert
Singers and Spirit of Ole Miss), studying private voice for
three years under Jean Jordan, and earning her Bachelor of
Music degree in 2000. For her last semester of college, she
completed her student-teaching with the choirs of Murrah
High School in Jackson, MS (Jackson Public School System)
under Doug Browning.
After doing a little substituting for the Shelby County
School district in Spring of 2000, Ms. Johnson began her
teaching career at Munford Middle School in Munford, TN
(Tipton County School district) in the Fall of 2001. She
taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Choir in separate classes and
6th, 7th, and 8th grade General Music, also in separate
classes. After teaching one year at MMS, she moved on to
teach the choirs at Cordova High School. She currently
teaches Vocal Music, Women's Choir Honors, Chamber Singers
Honors, Swing Choir Honors, and Music Theory at Cordova
High School.
In
addition to her choral directing duties at CHS, Ms. Johnson
also found time to coach the middle volleyball team at
Lausanne Collegiate School for three consecutive seasons
(2003-2005). She now coaches the JV Volleyball team at our
very own Cordova High School. Ms. Johnson is also a very avid volleyball player
herself, competing in co-ed indoor leagues around town, and
beach tournaments (Women's Doubles and Fours) out of town,
usually in Destin, New Orleans, Nashville, and Baton Rouge.
She travels to Destin, FL twice a year to compete in the Fudpuckers Beach Volleyball tournament, and she always comes
back with an extreme tan!
Ms.
Johnson enjoys singing as a chorus member of Opera Memphis
and has been seen in the operas The Magic Flute,
Madame Butterfly, and Tosca. In the Summer of
2006, she was asked by OpMem Artistic Director, Michael
Ching, to perform music from Opera Memphis' production of
Porgy and Bess for three events in which Opera Memphis
made a showing. She had the wonderful privilege of learning
and performing the famous pieces "Summertime" and "My Man's
Gone Now." For Opera Memphis' Fall 2006 production of
Porgy and Bess, Ms. Johnson was fortunate to debut on
the Opera Memphis stage performing the role of Lily.
In May 2007, she made her debut with Playhouse On the Square, playing the role of The
Moon in the musical Caroline, or Change.
Lori Johnson is an active member of the American Choral
Directors Association (ACDA), the Music Educators National
Conference (MENC), and the West Tennessee Vocal Music
Educators Association (WTVMEA). She currently serves as the
Tri-M Chapter Advisor for Cordova High School's Tri-M
International Music Honor Society, Chapter #3133. She
has also served as the Co-Chair for the All-Southwest TN Junior
High Honor Choir for three years, Chair of the All-State TN Women's Chorale for the
West TN region, and Co-Chair for the West TN Swing/Show
Choir Festival. This year, she will be chairing the West TN
Swing/Show Choir Festival.
